Becoming a Better Healer
As a player with many alts I have learned along the way that there is a big difference in play style in the DPS vs. Healing Classes when it comes to spell or attack rotation. When fighting in a group as a DPS party member you, for the most part, stick to a pretty consistent spell or attack rotation trying to pump out the most damage you can while following the kill order and not pulling aggro. From a healers prospective, with the exception of what spells you might cast to lead off a fight, there really is no set rotation as we live in the moment and work with what each situation deals us. This is what makes being a healer such an exciting challenge!
There have been many articles written on many different sites about the debate of healers and damage meters. Where meters like Recount are very useful for tracking your DPS they can also be helpful for we healers too; if you know where and what to look for. At this point I would like to refer you to an article written by Lawbringer of Dominate Your Server that digs into the importance of managing your Over Healing and gives us some excellent examples of how using the tools and paying attention to your personal performance can help you become a much better healer.
Over all, the main goal for any healer is to make sure that at the end of each fight your party/raid members (all if possible) are still standing when the mobs are not. There is a line between being considered a very good healer and just a mediocre one and sometimes it’s not all that thin. Gear can only take you so far. It is in the details like managing your over healing and mana pool. Knowing what all your spells are capable of and when it’s best to use each one vs. trying to stick to a set rotation. And learning how to react in different situations, being able to think fast on your feet that are key to getting you asked back into a group the heal another instance.
