The fourth of the seven primals is Primal Air. There are 2 zones that I farm in when I’m after primal air; Shadowmoon Valley (SMV) and Nagrand. The mobs you will be after are the air elementals to get Mote of Air (10 Mote of Air = 1 Primal Air).

Farming Locations

Let’s cover Nagrand first. I start here because you can begin farming for primal air while still in your mid 60’s. The Storm Ragers (level 64-66) and other air elementals are spread out all over the zone. As you’re running quests and farming for other items / primals, and see an air elemental roaming by, take minute to kill it. It’s surprising how fast the motes of air can add up just farming these randomly as you come across them. If you are in Nagrand after primals then you just need to pick a direction and circle the zone. There are 2 areas I’ve found to have a little higher concentration of mobs that you’ll want to hit: just south of the horde city Garadar (56, 45) and NW of Halaa near the cliffs (37, 32).

The place I normally go when I’m farming primal air is in SMV. Head for Alter of Shatar towards the NE side of the zone (it’s controlled by the Aldor if I remember right, so careful Scryers people). Go directly north of Alter of Shatar to the edge of the zone (61, 20) and you can farm Enraged Air Spirits (level 67-70) and other air elementals all day long. Note: A flying mount is very helpful in this area. This isn’t the easiest place to farm for primal air because there are a lot of trash mob adds to deal with and the terrain can be difficult. There is also an elite, rare mob that passes through this area (I forget the name but it’s a giant eye ball type mob). I’ve seen it 3-4 shot a level 70 character before, so heads up. The main reason I go here is because seldom, if ever, is there anyone else here. The drop rate for mote of air is good, with many mobs dropping 2 at a time. The re-spawn time on the elementals is fast enough that you’ll never have down time. And more air elementals spawn here than in Netherwing Pass. Once you learn the area and its pathing you can avoid a lot of the adds and just get to the mobs you’re after.

Easiest Location

The easiest and best place to farm for primal air is in the SE part of SMV along Netherwing Pass (60, 68). You will be after the same Enraged Air Spirits (level 67-70) and other air elementals as on the north side of the zone but there are no adds here to deal with, only other people farming the same mobs. That’s right. This area gets camped to death, but only because it really is the easiest place to farm for primal air. The drop rate for mote of air is good with many mobs dropping 2 motes at once. Re-spawn time is fast enough that if you have the place to yourself, or are only sharing it with 1 other person, that there is very little to no down time.

Post WotLK Launch Update:

In the AH on our server Primal Air, as with all the other Primals post launch of the WotLK expansion, have dropped drastically. Primals only seem to be needed by those who a leveling professions so the demand just isn’t there anymore. May I suggest taking a look in the AH to see what kind of deals you can find before spending your time farming. Odds are you’ll come out ahead in the long run.
