Part 1 of 7: Farming Primal Earth

So let’s start out with Primal Earth. If you have the mining profession you have an advantage over people that don’t. When you hit a skill level of 300, and begin to mine all over Outland, you have a chance at getting Mote of Earth (10 Mote of Earth = 1 Primal Earth) out of every ore node you find. They can add up pretty fast. I’ve gotten up to 4 at a time in just one hit on a ore node. In fact, if you do enough mining, you might not have to worry about killing mobs to get all the Primal Earth you’ll need.
Best Place To Farm
In case you don’t have mining, or you’re just after more and would like to get them faster, you’ll need to grind or farm the motes of earth from mobs. The area I’ve had the most success is in Nagrand. Head for the S, SW side of the zone. All along the southern part of Nagrand (approx. Loc. 27, 75 to 41, 86) there are lots of rock elementals, level range is 64-66. My main reason for hunting here vs. other places is that it’s never camped, ever. You can start on one end (east or west), kill every single mob to the other side, then repeat the going the other direction. And you can do this any time of day. The drop rate for mote of earth isn’t too bad here because you can kill them so fast. Re-spawn time seems pretty quick. And they do not spawn little friends when the die; like the elementals in Netherstorm and other areas.
As you farm this area there are a few other things to watch for as well. There are herbs and ore nodes all along the south edge with the rock elementals if you have those professions. There are 6-8 air elementals (level range 65-66) along this stretch that can drop Mote of Air for you. They’ll be out onto the grassy (green) area, but close enough to the rocks (gray ground) that you can see them easily and pull them to you. They die fast so it’s worth the effort. Also, keep an eye out for the Wild Elekk (always level 66). They drop Pair of Ivory Tusks 100% of the time that can be used for rep with The Consortium until you’re friendly with them. Tusks are not soul bound so you can mail them to an alt or sell them in the AH. And the last thing to watch for while farming in this area is Durn the Hungerer. He walks in a clockwise circle around the entire area south of the southern most paths in the zone. He does have a really small aggro range, but can sneak right up on you. He’s not noisy like our friend the Fel Reaver in Hellfire Peninsula, but the ground will rumble when he gets close. If Durn does decide to play with you your game of tag will be short lived; he gets bored easy.
Price
Last I checked a Primal Earth is selling for 4-15 gold on our server in the auction house.
Make sure to watch for more strategies about farming primals under Tips of the Trade. I hope that I have helped.
Happy Hunting and Be Safe,
Update:
As of the 2.2 patch on 25 Sep 07 you can now mine the rock elementals; so an even greater advantage farming for motes of earth if you have that profession.
Post WotLK Launch Update:
In the AH on our server Primal Earth, as with all the other Primals post launch of the WotLK expansion, have dropped drastically. Primals only seem to be needed by those who a leveling professions so the demand just isn’t there anymore. May I suggest taking a look in the AH to see what kind of deals you can find before spending your time farming. Odds are you’ll come out ahead in the long run.
