Raid Target Icons Posted in Helpful-In-Game-Info, Dungeons

Raid Symbols are an important tool for running dungeons or raids. The group leader can use Raid Target Icons by selecting the mob, right clicking on the portrait and choosing an icon from the drop down list. I know that Katrysta has her icons hot-keyd somehow.
Most of the pugs I’ve run in use a few symbols the same, Skull=Kill 1st, Moon=Sheep, Square=Ice Trap. However, every group will leader will have a kill order that he/she likes to follow. That’s why it’s important for the party leader to make it clear to the other party members what the kill order is before beginning the run. Take advantage of the time after you zone in while everyone is putting on their buffs.
Rather than saying “sheep left, sap right, attack middle”, a party leader can say “sheep moon, sap cross, attack skull”; once the convention is established and all players understand what each symbol means, the party leader won’t even have to say that. The advantage of this method over the former is that even if the mobs move around, it’s still clear what they’re designated for (it’s also often the case that it’s ambiguous exactly who the “left” mob is, and sometimes it’s hard and time-consuming to describe which mob you mean using only words). Or to make it easier just type Skull=Kill 1st, Circle=Kill 2nd, Moon=Sheep, Diamond=Sap and so forth. Assign a particular symbol to each of your crowd control party members and be consistent throughout the dungeon. As a party member, it is very important to stick to the kill order. Always stick to the mob that the tank is on unless directed by the party leader to off tank (you will be assigned an off tank symbol) as always wait for the tank to have threat before beginning your attack. Otherwise you will pull aggro off of the warrior/druid/paladin, which could lead to a raid wipe.
Placing the raid symbols is a matter of opinion and experience. I’ll admit that I have very little experience in placing the icons. Katrysta, our Priest is usually in charge of that. But I have done it in a few pugs and am grateful for the tips that those players have given me. Most situations will call for killing the caster first (as they cause a lot of damage and are generally annoying). If there is more than 1 caster, crowd control as many as you can (sheep, sap, ice trap, seduce, mind control, shackle, banish, enslave demon, sleep). After that assign cc to the melee mobs. Take advantage of your cc classes, even if there are only a few mobs in the group, better to deal with them 1 or 2 at a time if possible. Always specify which CC to kill first. Example: If Skull=kill 1st, Moon=Sheep, Circle=Kill 2nd, Diamond=Sap, then kill order will be Skull, Circle, Diamond, Moon because the Sap will brake first and the Mage can always re-sheep (or re-pig in Zarint’s case).
Boss fights are strait forward enough as far as raid symbols go. Skull=Boss=Kill, we all get that (adds will not be marked, but rather assigned out before the event begins). However, I can’t stress this enough, wait till the tank has aggro before attacking. Many times the tank will need to position the boss in a way to avoid/contain certain affects the boss may have (knock back, fear, poison, etc.). A good rule of thumb to follow when playing with a warrior tank, wait for 2 or 3 sunder armor icons to appear before attacking, this insures that she/he has good control of the situation.
Using raid target icons and making sure that your party knows what they mean (and follows the kill order) will make your dungeon/raid runs go much smoother.
